Experience and qualifications
Attorney-at-law Michael Grötsch was mayor of the city of Mannheim for Economic Affairs, Labor, Social Affairs and Culture from 2008 to 2024. Prior to this, he was an independent lawyer in Dresden from 1992 to 2008, specializing in municipal commercial, labor and corporate law, as well as managing director of the Saxony Municipal Employers' Association.
Michael Götsch studied at the universities of Frankfurt and Tübingen and at the Speyer University of Administrative Sciences. During his legal traineeship, he spent six months abroad at the German-Bolivian Chamber of Commerce Abroad in La Paz, Bolivia.
As mayor of the city of Mannheim, he was a member of the Committee for Economic Affairs and the European Single Market of the Association of German Cities. He was also Chairman of the Social Committee of the Association of Cities and Towns of Baden-Württemberg.
Upon assuming the office of mayor, Michael Grötsch became Chairman of the Supervisory Board of numerous municipal investment companies such as m:con - Mannheimer Congress GmbH, Rhein-Neckar Flugplatz GmbH, mg Mannheimer Gründungszentren GmbH, Popakademie Baden-Württemberg GmbH and the Supervisory Board of MKB Mannheimer Kommunalbeteiligungen GmbH as well as Chairman of the Investment and Allocation Committee of Beteiligungsfonds Wirtschaftsförderung Mannheim GmbH, among others.
Additionally, he was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of various charitable foundations in Mannheim and played an active role in renowned cultural foundations. Furthermore, he was a member of the judging panels for the Bertha and Carl Benz Prize, the Konrad-Duden Prize and the Schiller Prize.
